Illinois Lincoln Highway Exhibit Comes to Sterling

Sterling, Illinois – Illinois Lincoln Highway Traveling Exhibit on Display at the Welcome Center & Gallery during the month of July 2015. Sterling Main Street is fortunate to be given the opportunity to display the Illinois Lincoln Highway Traveling Exhibit at the Welcome Center & Gallery, located at 318 First Avenue in downtown Sterling, Illinois. Installation of the exhibit is scheduled for July 1st and it will be on display through the end of the month.   “We learned of this exhibit last fall,” says Janna Groharing, executive director of Sterling Main Street.  “As planning was underway for the opening of our new Welcome Center at that time and the development of a Lincoln-related mural was being discussed, we were very excited to be able to bring the exhibit to Sterling as part of its year-long tour through communities along the Lincoln Highway.  Having the exhibit here for the month of July ties in nicely with our Sterling Fest plans in celebrating the history of our community.  The Lincoln Highway was a very significant part of that history.”

This exhibit has been created to offer visitors a vivid interpretation of the Lincoln Highway’s exciting history.  Artful combinations of striking graphics and vintage photos are complimented by captivating stories to convey the famed highway’s impact upon America and the increasingly mobile society.  The exhibit’s intriguing topics include; Dreams to Reality, Development, The Evolution of Travel, Romance of the Road, Geography, Great People and Events and A Final Tribute.  Eight impressive, artist rendered panels make up the exhibit, along with a replica of an original Lincoln Highway directional marker.

The Traveling Exhibit was funded with federal grant dollars and created from historically accurate images and accounts. This exhibit, along with many other one-of-a-kind attractions, is produced by the Illinois Lincoln Highway Coalition (ILHC) to offer visitors exceptional opportunities for learning the significance of the Lincoln Highway.  Other ILHC projects include the Lincoln Highway Interpretive Mural Series and the collection of the Lincoln Highway Interpretive Gazebos.  Sterling is home to both a mural, installed in the fall of 2013 on the North wall of Grummert’s Hardware; and one of the Interpretive Gazebos, located in Lincoln Park at the corner of East 4th Street and 16th Avenue.

The Illinois Lincoln Highway Coalition is the Management Agency for the Illinois Lincoln Highway, a National Scenic Byway.   The Illinois portion of the Lincoln Highway is the only section of the entire highway to be designated a National Scenic Byway.

In collaboration with the Illinois Lincoln Highway partner communities, each destination on the Illinois route is promoted. The emphasis is focused on every community’s historic connection to the highway, along with spotlighting all the modern-day appeal the communities have to offer today’s visitor.

The exhibit will be on display all month long at the Welcome Center.  The Center’s hours are Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m. and Sundays from Noon until 4:00 p.m.  You may contact Sterling Main Street at 815-626-8610 to arrange other viewing times for groups or organizations.
